Paraguayan Swimmer Luana Alonso, Allegedly Expelled from Paris Olympic Village, Wanted to Compete for the US: Report
Alonso, who was later accused of "inappropriate conduct" and removed from the Olympic Village in Paris, competed for one season at Southern Methodist University as a sophomore and also attended Virginia Tech University during the 2021-2022 academic year.
At 20 years old, Alonso qualified for the women’s 100-meter Butterfly event through the universality system, which aims to increase the diversity of nations participating in the Olympic Games.
During her social media video, Alonso reportedly criticized the Paraguayan Olympic Committee’s (COP) treatment of its athletes. She claimed they threatened to release a statement against her and downplayed her achievements, stating that her success was largely due to her sponsors, not support from the committee. She also expressed frustration, saying, “They want to humiliate me and say ‘it is not a big deal that you are leaving because of universality.’”
Alonso revealed that she would prefer to represent the US because of the tension she experienced with her Paraguayan Olympic teammates and officials, whom she felt did not “support” or “trust” their athletes.
Known for her social media presence before her Olympic debut, Alonso failed to advance to the semi-finals on July 27. The following day, she surprised many by announcing her retirement from swimming, just weeks after getting a tattoo of the Olympic rings on her hip.
On Monday, reports surfaced that Alonso had been asked to leave the Olympic Village due to “inappropriate” behavior, which allegedly included a trip to Disneyland and wearing revealing outfits. Larissa Schaerer, head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, stated, “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.”
However, Alonso pushed back against these reports, stating on Instagram, "I just wanted to make it clear that I was never removed or expelled from anywhere, stop spreading false information." She added that while she didn’t want to make a public statement, she wouldn’t allow lies to affect her.
