Why Is the Facebook Icon Black? Social Media Users Share Theories on the Widespread Issue

Is your Facebook icon looking a bit different lately?

Many users have noticed a change in the appearance of the Facebook app icon on their phones. Instead of the familiar white "F" on a blue background, some are now seeing a black background with a blue "F."

This change has sparked discussions on social media, with one of the popular threads titled "What's Wrong With The Facebook Logo?" gaining traction on Reddit.

In the initial post, a user shared their frustration, saying, "The color has become weird with the latest version. I’ve deleted and reinstalled it twice. Still hasn’t fixed the issue. Any suggestions?"

So, why is the Facebook icon black?

Several users have reported similar experiences, noting that the darker icon appeared after an app update. One user, going by the name brownguymadeit, commented, "I thought I was tripping. I let my app store do automatic updates and thought my screen was dying."

There’s been a lot of speculation about the cause. Some think it’s a glitch, while others believe it might be related to dark mode features anticipated in Apple's upcoming iOS 18, which is currently in beta testing.

On a personal note, my own Facebook icon looked normal this morning on my iPhone. However, after I installed the latest Facebook app update (out of curiosity), the icon switched to the dark background, even though my phone wasn’t in dark mode.

I also installed the iOS 17.6.1 update, but the Facebook icon remained with the dark background.
