Ishaan Khatter Talks Working with Nicole Kidman and Making His Hollywood Debut in The Perfect Couple (Exclusive)

 

Bollywood star Ishaan Khatter has officially made his U.S. debut with the Netflix series The Perfect Couple, and for him, it was an unforgettable experience with what he calls a "pretty perfect cast."

“One of the things I really enjoyed about this show is working with such wonderful people,” says Khatter, 28, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. “They’re all professionals, and they’re very generous and kind.”

Khatter shares that his first meeting with co-star Nicole Kidman—who plays Greer Garrison Winbury, the mother of the groom—was awe-inspiring. The Perfect Couple is a murder mystery adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name.

“She was as normal as any other actor on set,” Khatter says about Kidman. “We had some very interesting things to connect on and chat about outside of the show’s narrative. She’s a wonderful person. She definitely has hypnotizing eyes, which I really enjoyed playing off of. It was an exciting foray into Hollywood, and I’m very grateful. This is going to be one of the highlights of my young career.”

The cast spent four months filming in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and took full advantage of their surroundings. In their downtime, they enjoyed activities like whale watching, wine tasting, and even shopping trips to Trader Joe’s.

“I can confidently say I’m almost as familiar with Cape Cod’s geography as a local would be,” says Khatter, reflecting on his time there.

In The Perfect Couple, Khatter plays Shooter Dival, the best man and childhood friend of the groom. Interestingly, the character in the novel was written as white, but director Susanne Bier made the choice to cast Khatter in the role, regardless of ethnicity.

“She [Bier] made the decision to cast my character without focusing on ethnicity,” Khatter explains. “Her vision was very distinct, and I wanted her guidance to shape my performance more than the book itself.”

Though he briefly read through the novel to get a sense of the story, Khatter says the show adaptation stays true to the heart of the narrative—a murder during a wedding weekend in Nantucket, Massachusetts. “It delivers the goods,” he adds. “It has the same beats, the same story arc, and it really comes to life on screen.”

Khatter landed the role with just one audition tape.

“I was filming a movie in Mumbai when I sent in a self-tape,” Khatter recalls. “I didn’t have anyone to help me record, so I did the audition playing off my own voice. I guess it worked out! I might do that more often.”

Following its Sept. 5 premiere, The Perfect Couple quickly shot to No. 1 on Netflix, marking a successful debut for Khatter. He’s also working on another Netflix project called The Royals, where he’ll play Prince Charming.

Looking ahead, Khatter dreams of collaborating with legendary filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. For him, acting is the ultimate form of self-expression.

“The best outlet I have in my life is acting,” Khatter says. “I’m not in a rush for people to know me through my words. I’d rather they see my work. Hopefully, they’ll be curious to see more, and I can keep surprising and exciting them with what I do next.”
