Week 12 of the NFL season brought excitement, drama, and historic moments despite six teams being on a bye and several games featuring heavily favored teams. Here’s a look at the biggest storylines from Sunday’s action.
Saquon Barkley's Record-Breaking Night
Saquon Barkley had a historic performance for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, leading his team to a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
The 27-year-old running back, who joined the Eagles from the New York Giants in the offseason, rushed for a franchise-record 255 yards on 26 carries. Adding in receiving yards, Barkley tallied over 300 total yards, becoming just the 13th player in NFL history to reach that mark. His 255 rushing yards rank as the ninth-most ever in a single game.
Barkley exploded in the second half with two long touchdown runs: a 70-yarder to open the half and a 72-yarder in the fourth quarter. He became the first player in NFL history to score multiple rushing touchdowns of 70-plus yards in the second half of a game.
After the game, teammates and opponents praised Barkley’s performance. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts called him “the best in the league,” while Rams rookie linebacker Jared Verse said, “I’ve never seen a running back like that.”
Barkley himself stayed focused, emphasizing consistency. “Whether I rush for 250 yards or 50 yards, I come in Monday and do the same thing,” he said. “My story’s not finished.”
With Barkley leading the NFL in rushing, the Eagles improved to 9-2, extending their winning streak to seven games.
Wild Finish in Washington vs. Dallas
The NFC East clash between the Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys ended with one of the wildest finishes of the season.
Dallas held a narrow 10-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter before things spiraled into chaos. A Cowboys touchdown and field goal extended their lead to 11 points, but Washington struck back with a Zach Ertz touchdown and a two-point conversion to close the gap.
On the ensuing kickoff, Cowboys returner KaVontae Turpin fumbled the ball, picked it up at the one-yard line, and returned it 99 yards for an electrifying touchdown.
Washington’s rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels wasn’t done yet. Trailing by a touchdown with 21 seconds left, Daniels hit Terry McLaurin for an 86-yard touchdown. But heartbreak followed as Austin Seibert missed the extra point, leaving the Commanders down by one.
Dallas recovered the onside kick and returned it for another touchdown, sealing a 34-26 win.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy called it a “game situational extravaganza,” while Washington’s Daniels continued to impress as the only rookie quarterback besides Marcus Mariota with at least 250 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, two touchdown passes, and a rushing touchdown in a game.
Chiefs Win Nail-Biter Over Panthers
The Kansas City Chiefs bounced back from their first loss of the season with a narrow 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Patrick Mahomes had a strong performance, throwing for 269 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. However, the Chiefs struggled to put the game away, allowing Panthers quarterback Bryce Young to lead a fourth-quarter comeback.
With the score tied at 27, Mahomes engineered a game-winning drive, capped by a 33-yard scramble to set up Spencer Shrader’s 31-yard field goal as time expired.
Mahomes credited the win to the team’s ability to handle pressure but admitted he’d prefer less drama. “I would love to win a game not by the very last play,” he joked.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce also hit a milestone, passing Antonio Gates for third-most regular-season receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history.
For the Panthers, Bryce Young showed growth, giving fans hope for the future despite the loss.
Week 12 showcased the NFL’s unpredictability, with incredible individual performances, thrilling finishes, and competitive games. The season’s stretch run promises even more excitement as playoff races heat up.
