At Tuesday's ABC Presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris managed to unsettle former President Donald Trump multiple times, according to body language expert Susan Constantine. Held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this was the first time Harris and Trump shared the debate stage. Many commentators noted that Harris had a strong showing, while Trump seemed to have performed better in previous debates.
One reason for Trump's off night was Harris' ability to push his buttons, causing him to grow increasingly frustrated as the debate progressed.
Constantine, speaking to Fox News Digital, explained that Harris seemed to know Trump’s weak points, such as his sensitivity about crowd sizes at rallies. Every time she brought up these points, Trump reacted defensively, which ended up hurting his performance.
“He fell for every one of her tactics,” Constantine noted. “When she poked at him, he would lash out, and she would keep pushing, especially on topics like the size of his crowds.”
At one point in the debate, Harris joked that people at Trump’s rallies often leave early out of boredom. Trump shot back, claiming his rallies had record-breaking crowds, while accusing Harris of busing in and paying her supporters to attend.
"She knew all his weak spots, and he kept defending himself instead of staying on topic," Constantine explained. "Rather than answering questions, he was too busy hitting back at her, which worked in her favor."
According to Constantine, Trump’s frustration was visible. At one moment, he slumped, dropping his shoulders and head, showing signs of anger. His facial expressions gave away his feelings of disgust and scorn.
Harris’ strategy of goading Trump seemed intentional, and Constantine noted that her smiles were a sign she knew she had him cornered.
"You could see it in his voice and facial expressions – he was mad," Constantine added. "His lips were tight, his eyebrows were tense. He was holding back a lot of anger, which only fueled Harris further. She knew she got to him, and every time she did, she rewarded herself with a big smile."
However, Constantine pointed out that many of Harris’ smiles seemed insincere. She often held them for too long, which is typically a sign of being condescending rather than genuine. When Harris didn’t agree with something Trump said, she would often respond with a smile, further frustrating him.
"Real smiles don't last longer than four seconds. Harris' long smiles were a way to dismiss Trump’s comments and poke fun at them," Constantine said. "She used that smile to cover up her disagreement."
The contrast between the two candidates was noticeable. Trump was more serious, while Harris maintained a happier demeanor, especially early in the debate when she displayed what Constantine called a "superiority stance" by leaning her head back and crossing her arms.
"It came off as smug and condescending, which wasn't a great look," Constantine noted.
Harris also used a lot of hand gestures and looked directly into the camera, which Constantine described as an effective way to connect with viewers. “She spoke directly to the American people and seemed very well-coached,” Constantine said.
However, Harris did struggle at one point when asked about her stance on abortion rights. Constantine observed that Harris seemed to evade the question, her eyes lowering, and she began nodding her head in a manner that the expert described as a "cluster of deception."
Overall, while both candidates had their strengths and weaknesses, it was clear that Harris knew how to trigger Trump and keep him off balance throughout much of the debate.
