LOS ANGELES — Michaela Mabinty DePrince, a celebrated Sierra Leonean ballerina who appeared on "Dancing with the Stars" and in Beyoncé's "Lemonade," has passed away at the age of 29. Her family shared the sad news on Friday.
The announcement was first made on DePrince’s Instagram account and later confirmed by her family in a joint statement on Facebook. They did not disclose the cause of death.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful sister, Michaela Mabinty DePrince. Michaela touched so many lives across the world, including ours. She was an unforgettable inspiration to everyone who knew her or heard her story,” the statement read.
The ballet community has been mourning her loss, with American ballerina Misty Copeland paying tribute. Copeland shared a video of DePrince dancing and quoted a passage from her book, Black Ballerinas, which highlighted DePrince’s determination. “Despite being told the world wasn’t ready for Black ballerinas, she remained focused and started making big strides,” Copeland wrote.
DePrince was born Mabinty Bangura in Kenema, Sierra Leone, on January 6, 1995, and entered an orphanage at age three during the country's civil war. She faced hardship, including being isolated from other children due to her vitiligo, a skin condition that affects pigmentation.
In 1999, when DePrince was four, she was adopted by a couple from New Jersey, Elaine and Charles DePrince. They enrolled her in ballet classes, which set the stage for her future success. By 14, she had earned a scholarship to the prestigious Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School for ballet.

DePrince gained wider attention after starring in the 2011 documentary First Position and went on to perform worldwide. She eventually joined the Boston Ballet as a second soloist and also became a motivational speaker, inspiring many with her life story.
