Victims of Apalachee High School Shooting Identified; 14-Year-Old Suspect Faces Murder Charges

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has confirmed the identities of the four victims killed in the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday morning. Two students and two teachers lost their lives in the attack.

The students have been identified as 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. The teachers who died were Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, both math instructors at the school. Nine others were injured in the incident but have since been treated and released from hospitals in Barrow and Braselton.

The suspected shooter, Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at the school, is currently in custody. According to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, the shooting occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. Officers quickly responded and encountered Gray, who surrendered after being confronted by a school resource officer. Sheriff Jud Smith explained that the situation could have escalated into a fatal officer-involved shooting had Gray not given up his weapon.

At this time, there is no known connection between the victims and the shooter, but authorities are investigating all aspects of the event. The GBI is working diligently to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and establish a clear timeline of the shooting. A follow-up press conference is expected soon to provide additional details.

Following the incident, students were safely evacuated from the school and released to their families by 11:30 a.m. Nearby Winder-Barrow High School was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution, though no further threat was found.

Gray is currently being held in a youth detention center but will be charged as an adult. While the full list of charges has not yet been released, it is confirmed that he will face murder charges at a minimum.

Apalachee High School will remain closed for the rest of the week as the investigation continues and the community processes this devastating event.
