Russell Wilson Shakes Off Rust in Steelers' Victory Over Jets

On Sunday night, Russell Wilson showed early signs of rust in the Pittsburgh Steelers' game against the New York Jets. Having not played since last Christmas Eve, the former eight-time Pro Bowler struggled at first. However, Wilson soon found his rhythm and led the Steelers to a decisive 37-15 victory.

Head coach Mike Tomlin praised Wilson’s performance, saying, "I thought he was excellent. He got better as the game went on. It’s been a while since he played, but he settled in, knocked the rust off, and distributed the ball well."

In the first half, Wilson faced boos from the home crowd after several missed throws. After an initial field goal, the Steelers had three straight three-and-outs. Some fans even started chanting for backup quarterback Justin Fields.

A turning point came when Beanie Bishop Jr. intercepted a pass, leading to a touchdown late in the first half. From that moment, Wilson and the offense came alive, scoring on their final five drives, including four touchdowns.

Wilson addressed the crowd’s early reaction, stating, "I really believe in staying neutral – not too high, not too low. I felt like it was playoff baseball. I started 0-for-2, but I knew I’d get hot. I kept telling coach, ‘I’m going to get hot,’ and sure enough, we did."

By the end of the game, Wilson had thrown for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, achieving a 109.0 passer rating. He also broke a long-standing Steelers record for most passing yards in a debut, surpassing Earl Morrall's 1957 record of 249 yards.

Wilson’s Week 7 performance was statistically stronger than any game Justin Fields had played so far in 2024. While Fields’ best passer rating was 104.0, Wilson posted a 109.0 rating in this game.

Reflecting on the win, Wilson said, "There’s so much more out there for us. We’ll get better as we go. There’s a lot of football left, and being where we are now is a good place."

Early struggles with accuracy hampered the Steelers’ offense, but Tomlin's decision to stick with the veteran quarterback paid off. Wilson connected with George Pickens on deep throws, which opened up the field for the offense. This marked a big improvement for Pittsburgh’s passing game, especially in the red zone.

Wilson added, "Throwing that first touchdown to George felt like the start of something. It’s like hitting the first home run. With all the hard work, it eventually turns in your favor, and it did tonight."

The 37 points scored were the most by the Steelers since Week 11 of 2021, when Ben Roethlisberger was still under center. If Wilson continues to hit key passes, Pittsburgh’s offense could become a formidable force moving forward.
