President-elect Donald Trump has announced Linda McMahon as his pick to lead the U.S. Department of Education. McMahon, widely known for her role in turning WWE into a global success with her husband, previously served as the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term.
McMahon’s nomination comes as a surprise since she lacks traditional conservative education credentials. NPR’s Cory Turner notes that while McMahon served on the Connecticut State Board of Education for a year and originally planned to become a teacher, her education background is relatively limited. Recently, she chaired the America First Policy Institute, which promotes school choice. Turner adds that abolishing the Department of Education, a goal for some conservatives, is unlikely, as Congress alone has the authority to dismantle it.
FEMA Under Fire for Disaster Response
FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell faced tough questions in Congress over accusations of slow disaster response and alleged political discrimination during recent hurricanes. The Biden administration has requested more funds for disaster recovery following a string of hurricanes, floods, and wildfires this year.
NPR’s Debbie Elliott reports that Criswell was specifically questioned about FEMA’s handling of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which devastated the Southeast. In one controversial case, a fired FEMA supervisor instructed workers to skip homes displaying Trump campaign signs after Hurricane Milton. The supervisor claimed it was for worker safety amid hostility, but Criswell denied any systemic bias at FEMA, emphasizing that the incident did not reflect broader agency practices.
Social Media Turmoil After Trump's Election Win
Over 100,000 users have left the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in what’s being dubbed the "X-odus" after Trump’s election victory. X, owned by Elon Musk, a Trump supporter and adviser, has been flooded with posts about Musk and Trump, driving some users to alternative platforms like Bluesky.
NPR’s Bobby Allyn reports that after the election, Musk adjusted X’s algorithm to boost his posts, making the platform less diverse in content. Bluesky, a smaller social network led by CEO Jay Graber, has seen rapid growth, gaining about a million new users daily since the election. However, Allyn cautions that Bluesky’s limited infrastructure makes it too early to declare it a replacement for X.
